In the present study, experiments were conducted to analyze the iron assimilation in plants. Two cDNAs from tomato roots (LeIRT1 and LeIRT2, GenBank Acc-Nr. AF176579 and AF176580) were isolated that complemented the growth defect of Fe uptake-deficient yeast mutants. The Fe uptake mediated by the LeIRT proteins was characterized in yeast.
