《讀四書大全說》是對《四書大全》進行批判，而在文句中往往批評《四書大全》的見解，而肯認朱熹注釋的正確。大體而言，王船山《讀四書大全說》對《四書大全》的批判不外乎幾點。對《四書大全》注疏引用朱熹部份，認為是《四書大全》曲解朱熹本意，再者對於胡炳文、蔡模、陳淳、黃榦、饒魯、陳櫟，等人的注釋，相當不以為然，認為這些人不懂義理面貌，而對《四書》本身的句子常常切割來分開解釋，以及把《四書》之間互屬不同章節的文句比附在一起，甚至有轉變成文字訓詁的意義，而少了義理的闡揚。
