Summary: Transpiration and film cooling promise to be effective methods of cooling gas-turbine blades; consequently, analytical and experimental investigations are being conducted to obtain a better understanding of these processes. This report serves as an introduction to these cooling methods, explains the physical processes, and surveys the information available for predicting blade temperatures and heat-transfer rates. In addition, the difficulties encountered in obtaining a uniform blade temperature are discussed, and the possibilities of correcting these difficulties are indicated. Air is the only coolant considered in the application of these cooling methods. Also available in electronic format.FU |

In this report the problem is considered of determining neutron flux distributions in reactors consisting of discrete regions of substantially different nuclear properties. Starting with these equations the problem is considered of determining the flux in one of the energy groups given the spatial flux distribution of the next higher energy group. The problem is handled by converting the differential equation with source term to an integral equation; under appropriate conditions the integral equation may be solved by a numerical iterative procedure. The conditions under which this may be done are discussed and formulas are developed for placing bounds on the errors. In addition the technique of obtaining flux distributions in complicated configurations by additive and multiplicative superposition of flux distributions of simpler configurations is considered. Expressions are derived for estimating the errors made in using these methods. A number of simple examples are presented. |

A method is given for the approximate solution of the equations of the two-dimensional laminar boundary layer in an incompressible fluid. The method is based on the use of a system of equations of successive moments that is easily solved for simple supplementary assumptions. The solution obtained is given in closed form by simple formulas and is claimed to be no less accurate than the complicated solutions previously obtained, which were based on the use of special classes of flows. The need for continuously scanning the mass spectra in the mass spectrometer has led to the development of a variable magnet power supply which will deliver from 0 to 500 milliamperes to a magnet of 1100 ohms resistance. The supply is a continuously variable, electronic, degenerative regulator which will regulate better than one part in 5000 throughout the range. Line voltage fluctuations of « 10 volts have no effect on the output of the supply. This bibliographic record is available under the Creative Commons CC0 public domain dedication. Biblography: p. 34 Integro-differential equation describing the diffusion of neutrons in a multiplying medium is studied under the assumption of plane geometry and linearly anisotropic scattering, but without the usual limitation to continuous slowing down and weak absorption. Under the condition that the integrated flux vanish at the boundary it is shown that a separable solution exists. The relation between core size and the number of neutrons required per fission for a steady state is determined. The results are specialized to the case of isotropic scattering in the laboratory system, and to the case of a medium containing hydrogen and an element which scatters without energy loss. |

A motion of a slightly viscous incompressible fluid that flows between two semi-infinite planes which intersect at an angle between 0À and 180À is discussed. The increase in thickness of the boundary layer near the line of intersection of the two planes, the limits of the effect of the corner, and the effect on the drag are determined. The analysis is made for both laminar and turbulent flow by using the momentum theorem and assuming suitable velocity profiles. The pilchard fishery of the west coast of North America was a minor one until stimulated by the war-born food demand of 1914-1918. Annual landings increased to 600,000 tons by the 1934-35 season and fluctuated about this level until the 1944-45 season. The year 1942 marks approximately the end of this period of growth of the fishery. |
