This thesis aims to compute the mean age of interstellar dust particles using a sputtering and recycling model originally formulated by Liffman and Clayton. The ages of the particles are evaluated after a period of 6 $\times$ 10$\sp9$ years, deemed here to be the age of our Galaxy, when the Solar System formed. The analyzing power, A, in inclusive $\pi\sp0$ production by a polarized proton beam at 185 GeV/c was found to be 0.10 $\pm$ 0.03 for $\langle$x$\sb{\rm F}\rangle$ = 0.52 and $\langle$p$\sb{\rm T}\rangle$ = 0.8 Gev/c. The $\pi\sp0$'s were detected using a combined lead-glass, lead-scintillator photon absorption calorimeter constructed at the Bonner Lab. A novel method of analysis for nonlinear stochastic dynamical systems under Gaussian white noise excitation is developed. The system response is Markovian and its probability density function (p.d.f.) is governed by the Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (FPK) equation. Of interest is the prediction of statistics of the response. Soybean oil was extracted from soybean flakes and porous alumina spheres by hexane and isopropanol. The importance of auditory stimulation for captive rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) was assessed through three studies. The first study allowed three groups of monkeys to control the onset and offset of a series of 5 types of auditory stimulation over 10 weeks. This study investigates the predatory behaviour of Cancer novaezelandiae (Decapoda : Brachyura : Cancridae), a subtidal crab from Lyttelton Harbour, Banks Peninsula.
