An analytical investigation was conducted to determine the basic heave response characteristics of a plenum-type tracked air-cushion vehicle as a function of vehicle operating parameters. In addition to determining basic characteristics, the effect of an active lip control system on the vehicle dynamic response was investigated. Nonlinear equations describing the dynamic and thermodynamics tate of the air-cushion system were derived, and the response of the system to sinusoidal perturbations of the guideway was obtained with the use of an analog computer. Results are presented in terms of vehicle-to-guideway motions and vehicle accelerations experienced during fundamental and subharmonic oscillations. |

Thin-film Cu2S-CdS solar cells, loaded at various fixed values of load resistance, were thermally cycled for 1429 cycles in a simulated space environment. Cell performance was measured under controlled conditions in air before and after thermal cycling. These data were used to determine the effect of load voltage on cell performance. The performance of the cells was relatively independent of load voltage up to about 0.39 volt. This appears to be a threshold voltage, beyond which there was a significant loss in cell performance. Fortunately, this threshold voltage appears to be sufficiently higher than the maximum power voltage of 0.33 volt so that it can be avoided in most applications. |

An improved method of boundary collocation was developed and applied to the two-dimensional stress analysis of cracks emanating from, or in the vicinity of, holes or boundaries of various shapes. The solutions, presented in terms of the stress-intensity factor, were based on the complex variable method of Muskhelishvili and a modified boundary-collocation method. The complex-series stress functions developed for simply and multiply connected regions containing cracks were constructed so that the boundary conditions on the crack surfaces are satisfied exactly. The conditions on the other boundaries were satisfied approximately by the modified collocation method. This improved method gave more rapid numerical convergence than other collocation techniques investigated. |

The present study is an attempt to make an assessment of the influence of wind shear on the longitudinal motion of airplanes. It was assumed that the wind is completely horizontal and its speed varies linearly with altitude. It is shown quantitatively that both glide and climb performance are influenced by wind shear and that trimmed flight at constant airspeed, attitude, and with fixed controls is along a parabolic path relative to the ground. The problem of the landing approach in a wind shear is examined in some detail. Small disturbance theory indicates no wind-shear effect on the short-period motion and the time for the phugoid to damp to half amplitude but the phugoid frequency and damping ratio vary considerably with wind shear. A nondimensional quantity which depends on the wind shear and airspeed is shown to be a fundamental parameter influencing the longitudinal dynamic behavior of the airplane. |

No special turbulence penetration techniques, speeds, or other restrictions were specified for the investigation, nor were any flights made solely to obtain turbulence data. During 79 flights, turbulence was encountered, and recorded on a VGH recorder, 6.2 percent of the total flight distance at supersonic speeds above an altitude of 12,192 meters (40,000 feet). Geographical locations are given for selected turbulence encounters. For 22 flights the airplane was instrumented to measure true gust velocities and the structural acceleration response to turbulence. The turbulence intensities measured were very low in comparison with those measured at high altitudes in other investigations. Acceleration response spectra, frequency response transfer functions, and coherence functions were computed from three turbulence encounters at Mach numbers of 0.88, 1. 59, and 2.35. Results are compared with calculated studies. Frequencies from the vertical and lateral structural modes, dominant in the airplane acceleration responses, were compared with the natural frequencies of the human body in the vertical and lateral directions. |
