The natural vibration and flutter characteristics of two corrugation-stiffened panels were studied experimentally and theoretically to determine the effects of finite deflectional, rotational, and torsional stiffnesses of the boundary supports. Flutter tests were conducted at a Mach number of 3. The experimental data are compared with results from a flutter theory for orthotropic panels which includes the effects of finite support stiffnesses as well as uniform in-plane loading of the panel. The investigation indicates that finite deflectional, rotational, and torsional stiffnesses of the boundary supports must be accounted for in the theory in order to match experimental natural frequencies of the test panels. However, it is concluded that structural damping (neglected in the theory) strongly influenced the flutter behavior of the test panels. Furthermore, the theory shows that the addition of torsional stiffening at the supports is a definite asset for increasing flutter dynamic pressure and may be extremely important in the design of panels for application at hypersonic speeds where thermal expansion may be desired. The servosystem design of a high-response airflow bypass valving system for supersonic mixed-compression inlets or other industrial or aerospace pneumatic systems is described. The valve utilizes a multislotted plate to achieve flow area change with minimum stroke and mass of moving parts. The servosystem utilizes a hydraulic piston-in-cylinder actuator close-coupled to a two-stage electrohydraulic servovalve. Using electronic compensation the small-amplitude response of the system, modulating 14 percent of its full flow area, is flat within 0 to -3 dB to 110 Hz. (161 cm [to the second power] ). A mathematical model of the system is presented and analytical responses are compared with experimental data. |

附註: | Prepared at Goddard Space Flight Center. Cover title. Bibliography: p. 19 Metal alloys were tested for sliding friction and wear characteristics in vacuum and in air. One purpose was the analysis of variations in the coefficient of friction with changes in air pressure, hardness, and type of alloy. Another purpose was the evolution of a scheme for description of wear patterns. With a Bowden-Tabor apparatus, sliders of various alloys were revolved in contact with a steel plate. Soft and hard steel, titanium, aluminum, copper, and copper-beryllium alloys were tested. Hardness of steel in the plate was varied. Visual and metallographic inspection, as well as study of microhardness traverses from below the wear interface, provided the results. Photomicrographs showing wear in the metal alloys are presented. This paper also provides graphical description of variations in the coefficient of friction. A description of observed wear patterns is accomplished by a scheme of four categories: prow formation, severe rider wear, intermediate rider wear, and mild rider wear. In each category, wear pattern is correlated with a mechanism responsible for its formation. |

This study presents an analysis of the transfer function of head motion to base motion for a thin-walled cylindrical tank partially filled with a liquid. This transfer function is part of the overall structural description for the analysis of POGO type instabilities in rocket vehicles. The analysis utilized the double Laplace transform to achieve a closed form approximate solution. An experimental verification of the analysis was performed using a cylindrical plastic tank containing water. The results clearly demonstrated the importance of considering fluid resonance effects on head to base reponse. Indeed, for at least two fluid heights the fluid mode effects dominated the mechanical modes for this transfer function. |

The combustor was comprised of three U-gutter flameholders mounted downstream of a trumpet-shaped diffuser in a rectangulai housing. A simple film-cooled liner was used. Tests were conducted at ambient pressure over a range of fuel-air ratios and combustor reference velocities. Increases in efficiency of more than 40 percentage points were achieved at the higher fuel temperatures. The results are applicable to natural gas afterburner design and to the design of advanced low-pressure-loss primary combustors. |

The stability to small perturbations of shear layer and jet flows (z) in atmospheres with potential temperature (z) is investigated. The problem is reduced to a chardcteristic value problem for the dimensionless wave frequency v which appears in a second-order differential equation with the dependent variable being the horizontal and temporal Fourier transform amplitude of the vertical component of the perturbation momentum vector. Broken-line profiles of E(z) and (z) are used in the analysis of this problem. Integral equations, over the domain of the fluid, which contain both quadratic forms and interfacial contributions, are derived. The interfacial terms vanish for continuous flows, and the theorems of Synge, Howard, and Miles follow. A necessary and sufficient condition for instability is also obtained for continuous flows; however, its usefulness is compromised by integrands which depend on both the basic state flow and the dependent variable of the governing differential equation. |

The converter was rated for a power output of 1 kW, with a 150-percent overload rating, and it produced a 200-V, +1-percent, dc output from an input of 56 V, +10 and -20 percent. Voltage regulation is accomplished by varying the duty cycle of the internal 7-kHz quasi-square-wave carrier. Integrated circuits in the control section, a proportional current drive system, and powdered metal cores (Ni-17Fe-2Mo) for the power transformer were some of the design features. The measured efficiency peaked at 92 percent and was 88 percent at 1 kW. The total component weight was 6 lb (2.7 kg). |

Tests were conducted in the NASA spinning-torque apparatus to determine the effect of lubricant additives on the torque of a ball spinning in a nonconforming groove. The base lubricant was a synthetic paraffinic oil to which were added 0.1, 1. 0, and 10 volume percent of either an antiwear or EP additive. The additives used were stearic acid, oleic acid, oleyl phosphate, oleyl phosphite, and zinc dithiophosphate. Under the test conditions, elastohydrodynamic lubrication prevailed with no significant surface interaction. The addition of the antiwear or EP additives in several concentrations to the synthetic paraffinic oil did not change the spinning torque over that obtained with the base fluid. The viscoelastic properties of the base fluid were not changed by the additives tested.--P. [i]. Also available online in PDF from NASA Technical Reports Server. The feasibility of cooling the first-stage turbine stator directly with cryogenic fuels is investigated based on a numerical heat transfer analysis of methane-and hydrogen-cooled vanes. An insulation barrier between the fuel cooling passages and the external vane surface was required to prevent adverse cooling conditions. The cooling configuration analyzed was that of tubular cooling passages embedded in insulation material surrounded by an outer vane shell. The results indicated that the turbine stator vanes could be adequately cooled with methane or hydrogen fuel at a 2490' F (1639K) local-hot-spot gas temperature. |

An experimental and analytical program was conducted to investigate the longitudinal vibration properties of a two-stage full-scale launch vehicle loaded with various amounts of simulated propellants. A two-dimensional finite-element mathematical model formulated from vehicle physical parameters and experimental results was the basis for free-and forced-vibration analyses. Good agreement was obtained between the measured and predicted responses. Vector-response plots enhanced the interpretation of experimental and forced-vibration analytical results. Proper identification and correlation of the modes required a knowledge of the accelerations along the length of the vehicle, accelerations of specific components such as the engines and the turbopump, and pressures at the top and bottom of the propellant tanks. |
